What is a Resume?

A resume is a one or two-page summary of your education, skills, accomplishments, and experiences.

PURPOSE OF A RESUME

The purpose of the resume is to:

  • Get you considered for a job
  • Get your foot in the door
  • Get an interview
  • Get job offers

  • Objective/ Summary
  • Education
  • Work Experience
  • Other Information
  • References

PART 1 – CONTACT INFORMATION

  • Name- avoid nicknames
  • Address
  • Telephone/ Cell phone
  • Record neutral greetings on voicemail/ answering machines
  • E-mail addresses – have a professional one

PART 2 – OBJECTIVE AND SUMMARY

State your Goal or type of work:

  • Be specific
  • Entry-level
  • Internship
  • Management
  • Tailor your objective for each job
  • Summarize Qualifications

PART 3 – EDUCATION

List before “experience” if a new graduate with little experience- Begin with most recent education.

Include:

  • Degrees
  • Institution
  • Major/Program
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher
  • Mention honors

PART 4 – WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Give a brief overview of work skills
  • Use action words to describe job duties
  • List chronological order (last job first)
    • Job titleCompany’s Name
    • City & State
    • Start and Ending Employment Dates
    • Job responsibilities (emphasizing skills & achievements)

PART 5 – OTHER INFORMATION

Information which enhances your employment possibilities such as:

  • Licenses, Certificates, Awards
  • Special Skills (computer skills, language etc.)
  • Leadership experience
  • Community Involvement, Volunteer Work

PART 6 – REFERENCES

  • DO NOT include REFERENCES on the resume
  • ADD NOTE: Will furnish upon request
  • Have four available
  • Use professionals

RESUME CHECKLIST DO’S AND DONT’S

DO:

  • Spell check
  • Check for grammatical errors
  • Have someone proofread
  • Use white or off-white resume paper
  • Print on one side
  • Use font size 10-14
  • Mail in large envelopes

DON'T:

  • Use multiple font styles
  • Underline or italicize
  • Use graphics or shading
  • Staple or Fold
