Job Description & Responsibilities:
The Position: The purpose of this classification is to assist the City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney with routine aspects of legal and factual data compilation and analysis, drafting legal documents, conveying routine legal information under supervision and administrative functions for the department. Duties: Drafts legal documents to include pleadings, statements, affidavits, deeds, resolutions/ordinances and Rem petitions. Performs title searches in accordance with current Georgia Bar title standards; tracks work in progress/transactions involving in rem cases; initiates problem-solving activities concerning such litigation. Conducts research for routine and specific legal and factual information; compiles data as directed by attorneys. Compiles, reviews and organizes evidence and other information for hearings, meetings, etc. Drafts routine pleadings and statements, affidavits, and/or other legal documentation as appropriate or at the direction of the attorneys. Prepares routine/legal standard opinions and position statements for attorney review; maintains filing system on all legal documentation; maintains files regarding confidential legal matters, opinions, and personnel records. Obtains documents, correspondence, or other materials necessary to answer inquiries or resolve problems; conducts research assignments of simple to moderate complexity. Assists the senior paralegal with reviewing and analyzing requests for public records from attorneys, the media, and other parties. Provides internal legal guidance for the retrieval, review and distribution of open records. Determines whether open records are subject to redaction or withholding due to a legal exception. Corresponds daily with outside vendors and requesting parties to coordinate fulfillment of Open Records Act requests. Performs a detailed review and analysis of responsive records before disclosure to remove/redact exempt contents such as trade secret data or protected health information. Processes and tracks payments for Open Records Requests. Serves as notary public for office. Provides assistance to outside counsel and/or agencies involved in litigation and administrative matters as well as obtain documents, correspondence or other materials necessary to answer inquiries or resolve problems. Communicates with city attorney, manager, city officials, employees, city departments, legal officials, banking officials, outside agencies, consultants, customers, the public, the media, and other individuals to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction. Attends meetings; serves on committees as needed; makes presentations. Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS: Performs other related duties as required. Operates a motor vehicle to conduct work activities.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Associate's degree or vocational school certification with course work emphasis in Paralegal/Real Estate or closely related field preferred; Bachelor's degree strongly preferred; additionally, two (2) years previous paralegal and law office experience required, including: ability to gather and organize legal evidence, knowledge and understanding of legal contracts, agreements and settlement procedures and documentation; ability to draft a wide range of legal documents; computer skills in Word Perfect or Microsoft Word and Excel; and excellent interpersonal and communication skills; or any equivalent combination of experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must be a current certified notary public. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
