October 30, 2013- Albany, Ga. from WFXL-- Two years ago, more than 5,000 students left the Technical College System of Georgia after the GPA requirement for the HOPE Grant was raised.
Now that the requirement has been lowered schools are now trying to pick up the pieces and get those students back.
Back in 2011 more than 11,000 students at 24 technical colleges across Georgia lost their HOPE Grant due the GPA requirement being raised from 2.0 to 3.0.
Officials with Albany Technical College say that changed didn't affect them, but Jana Wiggins with Moultrie Technical College says when the GPA requirement was raised enrollment decreased tremendously.
"Those students who were previously able to receive financial aid through the HOPE Grant may or may not of had the required 3.0 GPA to continue getting that financial aid."
Both schools say they're in the process of reaching out to all of the students who left asking them to re-consider coming back
We reached out to Wiregrass Technical College, and Angela Hobby with the school tells FOX 31 that enrollment there was also hurt due to the GPA requirement change.
