Albany, Georgia – Albany Technical College will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. on Thursday December 13, 2018 highlighting the renovations of the teaching lab in the Surgical Technology Program. The event will be held at the Nathaniel Cross Health Technology Building (HCT), room 139, on the campus of Albany Tech.
The Surgical Technology Program at Albany Technical College was accredited May 13, 1993. Current Program Director, Lori Day, stated that the new lab enhancement was made possible by World Class Lab funding which provides support to renovate entire labs and deliver the latest state-of-the-art equipment to best train students. State bond funds were also used in the renovation of the Surgical Technology lab.
“This reaffirms our commitment to supporting a strong healthcare program in the field of Surgical Technology that has 100% job placement in the past 3 years. We are committed to assisting employers, providing well qualified and trained Surgical Technologist,” stated Dr. Anthony Parker, President of Albany Tech.
The Surgical Technology DIPLOMA program is being phased out and will be replaced by the Associate of Applied Science, Surgical Technology Degree. The last DIPLOMA level class was accepted into core courses in Summer Semester 2018, which means that all pre-requisite classes need to be completed by December 2018. If a prospective student is not accepted for progression into the Spring Semester 2019 occupational courses, they will need to re-apply for the Surgical Technology Degree level program or choose a different program to pursue.
The FIRST Surgical Technology degree level students will be accepted in Summer Semester 2019 to complete all prerequisite courses to progress into the Surgical Technology occupational courses in Spring Semester 2020.
According to a recent study conducted by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the forecast for employment opportunities for surgical technologists is one of rapid growth. About 71 percent of jobs for surgical technologists were in hospitals, mainly in operating and delivery rooms. Other jobs were in offices of physicians or dentists who perform outpatient surgery and in outpatient care centers, including ambulatory surgical centers. A few technologists, known as private scrubs, are employed directly by surgeons who have special surgical teams, such as those for liver transplants. Salaries for surgical technicians average between $33,490 and $46,910 annually.

World Class Labs funding was initiated in the State Legislature and approved by Governor Nathan Deal. Legislative intent for the use of these funds is to provide funding to renovate entire labs and provide the latest, state-of-the-art equipment to best train students for the current workforce environment. These funds, along with all State bond funding, are administered through the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission (GSFIC).
