ALBANY, GA – Albany Technical College’s Special Needs department will hold a welcome reception for students enrolled in the LEAP (Leveraging Education for Advancement Program) program on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at 10:45 a.m. in Freedom Hall, Room 108.
The Leveraging Education for Advancement Program (LEAP) is an Inclusive Postsecondary Education Program (IPSE). The LEAP program at Albany Technical College (ATC) is designed to provide students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, ages 18 and older, an inclusive postsecondary college education experience. LEAP focuses on developing academic, personal, and self-advocacy skills that lead to employment. Each participant works closely with an academic transition teacher and a trained mentor to assist students in meeting their academic and social needs. LEAP students receive a personalized postsecondary education.
The program kicked off last fall, enrolling only one student, and has now grown to a total of five students. In addition to enrolling for college credit courses that lead to a Business Office Assistant certificate, Albany Tech LEAP students also participate in a range of vocational and social experiences individually planned for each student. They also participate in employment experiences on and off-campus and receive services from an Academic Transition Teacher, as well as individualized services such as mentor, tutor, technology, and natural supports in college courses.
