July 25, 2011- As part of its tradition in evaluating students in each of its programs, Albany Technical College will take the Work Ethics procedure to a higher level of accountability beginning fall semester.
Traditionally, each student was given an actual Work Ethics grade in each course. However, under the new model, the Work Ethics grade will be more integrated into each course. Beginning August 1 and carrying into the fall semester, the Work Ethics traits will be introduced in a designated entry-level course in each program. Students will be told how and when they will be assessed. Each instructor will proceed with instruction of traits in a method that suits the design of the course. The Work Ethics (WE) module must be successfully completed with a passing score before the student can receive a grade for the course. At the conclusion of the course, a formal evaluation form will be completed by the instructor to document successful completion.
A Student Learning Outcome related to Work Ethics will be written for each program and division deans will maintain and monitor a list of assigned entry level and capstone program courses that incorporate the WE module assessments. Since the work ethics requirements vary from program to program, each program determines and teaches the traits relevant to the work environment.
Albany Technical College instructs and evaluates students on work ethics in all programs of study. The 10 work ethics Albany Tech identifies as essential for student and work success include the following: appearance, attendance, attitude, character, communication, cooperation, organizational skills, productivity, respects, and teamwork. Each of these traits are integrated into the program standards of each program curriculum, which allows each program to make work ethics a relevant and meaningful part of the course.
