June 3, 2011 - In conjunction with Albany Technical College’s 50th Anniversary celebration, the college will hold its Second Annual G.I.R.L.S. Summer Camp June 6-8, 2011. The theme for this year’s event is Gumption. Innovation. Responsibility. Leadership. Service. (G.I.R.L.S.), “Building Human Capital.”

The G.I.R.L.S. Camp will include high school students from the College’s seven-county service delivery area, including Baker, Calhoun, Clay, Dougherty, Randolph, and Terrell counties. The camp will also consist of students from Turner Job Corps. These young ladies will spend three days on the campus of Albany Technical College and learn the basics of carpentry, electrical wiring, electromechanical engineering, and heating & air conditioning. The campers will also receive instructions from the City of Albany’s Planning and Development Services, on code enforcement requirements for new construction sites and have an opportunity to assist Flint River Habitat for Humanity in painting and landscaping new Habitat homes.

The featured guest speaker for the camp will be Mrs. Beniquez Palmer, a Project Manager for New South Construction of Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Palmer has over 12 years experience in construction and engineering filed, including Water/Waste Design, Civil Design and Construction Management.

“According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the labor market in our region and country has experienced incremental growth in the last couple months. As we continue to rebound from a sluggish economy, we must have a skilled and educated workforce ready to meet the needs and demands of industry. It is our objective to provide local industry with a workforce that is capable, competent, and creativity enough to compete on a global stage,” said Emmett Griswold, Dean of Albany Tech’s Carlton Construction Academy.

“Hopefully, this three day experience will generate a genuine interest among the campers in a construction & energy career path,” added Griswold.

Albany Technical College thanks its sponsors, which include the Georgia Energy and Industrial Construction Consortium (G.E.I.C.C.), Association of General Contractors (AGC), City of Albany, New South Construction of Atlanta, GA, Flint River Habitat for Humanity, and Advertising with Lisa.
