Albany Technical College Associate of Science in Nursing Program to Hold Pinning Ceremony

ALBANY, GA – Albany Technical College’s Associate of Science (ASN) in Nursing program will hold a pinning ceremony for the 2017 senior class on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at 6 p.m. at the SOWEGA Council on Aging Center, 335 West Society Avenue, Albany, Georgia.

Nearly 30 students will be pinned at the Thursday evening ceremony. Guest speaker for the ceremony will be Mattie Buchannon, who has served as a registered nurse for more than 40 years and also served as a nursing instructor and the Dean of Academic Affairs for the Healthcare Technology division at Albany Tech.

Buchannon began her career as a charge nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Sumter Regional Hospital. She later served as a Nurse Manager of the CCU/MICU of Phoebe Health Systems, as well as a Medical Floor Nurse Educator with Phoebe. After working for 17 years with Phoebe, she accepted a nursing instructor position with Albany Tech in the Practical Nursing program.

During her time at Albany Tech, Buchannon served as program chair, SkillsUSA Lead Advisor, Albany Tech’s Safety Committee, and numerous others. She retired from Albany Tech as the Dean of the Healthcare Technology division in December of 2016.

A graduate of Dougherty Leadership Council, Buchannon received her associate’s degree in Nursing from Albany Junior College (Darton), a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southwestern State University, and a master’s degree from Albany State University. She also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Liberty House and is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.
