Albany Tech to offer Health Information Technology degree program this summer

May 7, 2010 - Beginning summer quarter, Albany Technical College will add an associate degree in Health Information Technology to its list of quality healthcare technology programs.

The Health Information Technology program combines health care with information technology. Health information technicians are  esponsible for maintaining and analyzing data crucial to the delivery of quality patient care.

“Health Information Technology is a great career for those that would like to work in the business side of health care. The trend for Health Information Technology is to move from paper based to the electronic health records. Electronic health records will continue to be the key topic in health care,” said Dorothy Garner, Dean of the Healthcare Technology division at Albany Tech.

Victoria Mills has joined the Albany Tech faculty to head up the new program. Mills holds a master’s degree in Business dministration/Healthcare Management, a bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, and an associate degree in General Studies. She also holds current certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator. Mills has taught as an adjunct instructor for Atlanta Technical College, DeVry University and Macon State College.

“As healthcare continues to emerge, there will be a greater need for Health Information Technology professionals. Albany Technical College has created an opportunity for students to become involved in a very diverse field of study,” said Victoria Mills, instructor for the Health Information program at Albany Tech.

Employment opportunities for graduates of approved health information technology programs are excellent. Some of the facilities utilizing health information technology professionals include those providing inpatient care, ambulatory care, long-term care, psychiatric care, cancer registry and medical insurance providers. Other employment opportunities include mental health facilities, skilled nursing facilities, health maintenance organizations, health insurance agencies, ambulatory care facilities, and large physician group practice facilities.
