Special report on ATC’s Center for Emergency Responders to air nationally
August 17, 2009 – A National Report Series featuring Albany Technical College’s Charles B. Gillespie, M.D. Center for Emergency Responders will air August 17-30th on several major television networks in cities across America. The documentary, produced by Vision Media Television, highlights the Fire Science, Paramedic/EMT and Law Enforcement Technology programs.
The story focuses on the changing role of emergency responders in a post 9-11 world, including the need for emergency workers to be cross-trained in all areas of law enforcement and disaster response.
“With the increase in terrorism worldwide, it’s important for first responders to be prepared to handle any dangerous situation they find themselves in, no matter their specific area of study,” said Dr. Anthony Parker, ATC President. “Therefore, Albany Tech’s students are cross-trained. For example, a fire science student will learn certain EMT and criminal investigation skills so he or she is better prepared.”
The documentary highlights ATC’s students performing a mock drill in which emergency responders are called to a fiery car crash. Students were also filmed in the state-of-the-art labs found in the new Charles B. Gillespie, M.D. Center for Emergency Responders. The labs included life-like mannequins for paramedic training, fire and EMS trucks, and a CSI area.
The story will air on selected networks including CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and Family Net between today and August 30, 2009. The documentary will also air on certain public radio stations across America. The exact dates and times of the airings are at the discretion of the network programmers and affiliate stations.
