MillerCoors to grow jobs with the help of Quick Start
January 13, 2009 (WALB) - Miller Coors Albany plant has added a new product to its line and with it, new jobs. Albany's plant is now producing Coors Light as well as its Miller products.
Training of new employees will be done through the state's QuickStart program which is allowing local business to expand for minimal cost.
What was once a taste of the Rocky Mountains is now a taste of south Georgia. As part of the consolidation of both Miller and Coors Brewing, Albany's plant is now producing Coors Light. This week they'll make the announcement of how many new employees it will mean for the plant and how Georgia's Quick Start program had a lot to do with the decision.
"We consider it one of our top incentives that the state provides us, free of charge," said Justin Strickland, Albany Dougherty Economic development Commission.
MillerCoors officials say the decision to produce Coors Light in Albany was a result of the joint venture between the two companies and the Quick Start program makes it possible to train those employees for free.
"If a company chooses to expand in the state of Georgia and creates 15 or more new jobs then they qualify for the Quick Start program," said Matt Trice, Albany Technical College Vice President of Economic Development.
Economic Development officials have placed an emphasis on business retention and helping local industry to grow not only at MillerCoors, but at other businesses like Hamilton Relay, Mars and Procter and Gamble.
"Our focus has been retaining the jobs that we have and growing the industries that we have so, Quick Start can only help us grow the industries that we have," said Strickland.
They say depending on the company's needs, that training can be done in the classrooms at Albany Technical College or inside the company plant on the equipment employees will use.
Any information the program creates for training can be used over and over again, by the company. MillerCoors officials along with the Economic Development Commission and Albany Technical College will release more information on MillerCoors expansion Thursday.
