(WALB) -  With competition for jobs so tough these days, more people are turning to technical colleges to improve their skills or learn new ones.

That was evident by the big crowd at tonight's spring commencement at Albany Technical College.

The school awarded 59 associate degrees, 291 diplomas, and 183 technical certificates.

The president said a technical college education is more useful than ever these days.

"We know they're likely to find better jobs especially with this recession going on, than they would if they didn't spend the time in technical education. This is a great opportunity for them to go on and do great things for themselves and their families," Dr. Anthony Parker, Albany Tech President.

More than 100 students also received their GED's from the college this spring.
