Albany, Georgia - On October 10, Albany, Georgia experienced a devastating storm, Hurricane Michael, which impaired much of the city. One of the buildings on Albany Technical College’s campus, Carlton Construction Academy, suffered extensive damage to the roof. As a result, six programs were affected involving over 200 students. The six programs include: Air Conditioning Technology, Building Maintenance, Carpentry, Electrical Construction, Masonry and Plumbing Technology. These programs will have temporary locations around the campus at Albany Technical College. Classes are scheduled to resume for all students Monday, January 7. Any construction student affected by this temporary move may report to the Academic Advisement Center for further information in the Nathaniel Cross Health Care Technology Building.
The former Albany Regional Youth Detention Center (RYDC) Building located at 2030 Newton Road, built in 1967, closed when the state allocated $12.27 million for a Regional Youth Detention Center in Terrell County. In November 2018 the state signed the building over to Albany Technical College. This will be the temporary lab location for Plumbing, Carpentry and Masonry programs. It offers more than ample room to house the three programs, staff and equipment until the on-campus location is repaired. Building Maintenance, Air Conditioning Technology and Electrical Technology will all be temporarily located in Artisan Hall (Building D). Engineering Prep Academy will be located on campus in the Center for Excellence IT and Electronics building (Building H) until the repairs are completed at the Carlton Construction Academy.
Emmett Griswold, VP of Academic Affairs at Albany Technical College, stated, “Six programs will be relocated temporarily throughout our campus. I am working closely with our faculty to make sure the equipment and classroom structure is in place in a timely manner.”
“The primary focus is to make this move as seamless as possible for our students, ensuring that our workforce needs are met with clean and safe facilities for proper instruction,” stated Dr. Anthony Parker, ATC President.
Repair of the Carlton Construction Academy facility is expected to take less than one year with anticipation of reopening the Carlton Construction Phase I by Fall, 2019. Albany Technical College is working closely with the Technical College System of Georgia to secure the financing and oversee the project. Repair on the damaged Academy is slated to begin February 2019.
