Bobby McKinney to be roasted in Albany Tech Foundation fundraiser

February 15, 2016 - Albany, GA from The Albany Herald - The Albany Technical College Foundation will hold its 13th annual Celebrity Roast at 7 p.m. March 11 in the Kirkland Conference Center on the ATC campus. Albany Convention and Visitors Bureau Chair Bobby McKinney is set to be the target of many well-aimed barbs and zingers.

The Foundation hosts two major fundraisers each year — a Golf Tournament and Silent Auction in October and a Celebrity Roast in the spring. The funds raised through these events go toward scholarships and other foundation and college programs and activities.

McKinney is relentless in his efforts to promote the city and its educational institutions — Albany State University, Darton State College and Albany Tech.

"Albany Tech turns out a prepared student, and they do a fantastic job," McKinney said. "They can tailor a course that will prepare people for almost any business."

Then McKinney could not help but pump up the city of Albany.

"For a community this size and located where we are, just having a Procter & Gamble plant here, with one of the largest paper machines in the nation, is a huge thing," McKinney said. "But then you realize, we have MillerCoors, Mars Chocolate, Thrush, Sasco, Equinox, Coats and Clark, Phoebe Putney (Memorial Hospital) ... and that's not even mentioning the Marine (Corps Logistics) Base.

"And we also have the (Flint) RiverQuarium, Thronateeska, Chehaw — which is an amazing facility — Theatre Albany, Nicole Williams' arts group (the Albany Area Arts Council), the symphony orchestra. And people from the Northeast come all the way to Albany just to wander through the Civil Rights Institute. People would kill to have all that in a community our size."

McKinney added he is looking forward to the roast. Odds are that much will made of his ubiquitous bow-ties during the event.

"I expect us to have a good time. After all, it is a roast," McKinney said. "I an looking forward to eating good food and enjoying the fellowship."

The cost for the event is $50 per person and $500 for a table of eight. For more information, call 229-430-6624 or email jnajjar@albanytech.edu.

The Albany Tech Foundation Inc. was established in 1987 to support the College, its programs and activities. As a 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization, the Foundation serves as the conduit through which cash, equipment and property donations pass from donors to the College. The operations of the Foundation are guided by a Board of Trustees consisting of community leaders from throughout Albany Tech's seven-county service delivery area.
