March 2, 2015- Albany, GA- Albany Technical College's Titan Alliance, composed of high school students who are dually enrolled in Engineering Technology, won All Star Rookie and Highest Rookie Seed Awards at the Georgia Southern Classic Regional tournament held on Saturday, February 28, at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Ag Center in Perry, Georgia.
Recognizing outstanding achievement in Robotics by a first year team, the Rookie All-Star Award team was founded by Dean Kamen, who had a vision of changing the culture and creating the spirit of Gracious Professionalism open and friendly to new participants. The award recognizes the level of commitment teams and mentors must make to get a first year team "off the ground."
Advisors for the Albany Tech team were Dennis Courtney, Engineering instructor and Lead Mentor, Manuel Hall, Chair of the Electronics Technology division, and Darren Hagler, Computer Information Systems instructor and Head Coach, and Kacey Merchant, Coach. These students will go on to compete at the World Championship in April in St. Louis, Missouri.
Over 800 teams from around the world will be participating in the World Championship, including 3200 from the U.S., 250 from Canada, 75 from Israel, 50 from Mexico, 39 from Afghanistan, 21 from Kazhakistan, 19 from Australia, 97 from Turkey, 17 from China, 12 from Brazil, seven from Chile, two from the Dominican Republic, two from the Netherlands, two from Saturnia, two from the United Kingdom, one from Taiwan, one from Singapore, one from United Arab Emirates, and one from France.
The Titans Alliance will be one of seven teams representing Georgia for the group from the United States.
