February 19, 2014- Albany, GA- Albany Technical College will hold the Tenth Annual Faith-Based Luncheon for community clergy members on Thursday, February 20, 2014, beginning at 11am in the Kirkland Conference Center.
The theme for the luncheon is "Real World Opportunities." The purpose of this event is to provide information to clergy in our community about educational choices at Albany Tech, financial aid options and employment opportunities available to graduates.
"We understand the important role ministers play in the lives of our students," said Lisandra De Jesus, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Albany Tech. "It is these people who shape our students' character and encourage them to take advantage of education and better their lives. With the help of our local clergy, we can strengthen the Southwest Georgia community – one family at a time."
Keynote speaker will be Dr. Anthony O. Parker, President of Albany Technical College. Serving as the President of Albany Tech since 1995, Parker has the longest tenure of any president every serving at Albany Tech. Parker is a member of the Presidents' Council of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). In 2006, he was appointed by former Governor Sonny Perdue to serve on the Career and Technical Education Advisory Commission. More recently, he was appointed to serve on Governor Nathan Deal's Education Funding Commission to examine how funding formulas for the University System and the Technical College system should be changed in order to improve higher education outcomes in the state.
A native of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Parker received his bachelor's degree in Accounting from South Carolina State University, his master's degree in Counseling and Guidance from South Carolina State University, a specialist in education degree in Educational Administration from Augusta College, and a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. He also graduated from the Institute of Educational Management at the Harvard University Graduate School. He also graduated from the Executive Leadership Institute at the League for Innovation in the Community College and also served as a faculty member on four occasions.
Several other departments at Albany Tech will address the group and provide a challenge to them of helping those in the community who may need to go to college or even get their GED® to do so. In addition, the recently named 2014 Albany Tech Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) winner, Kristen Lord, Medical Assisting student, as well as GOAL Finalist Kanava Carter, Early Childhood Care and Education student, will address the group.
