Albany Technical College Holds Fall Commencement Exercises

Matt ArthurALBANY, GA – Albany Technical College will hold Fall 2018 Commencement Exercises on Thursday, December 6, 2018, 7 p.m. at the Albany Civic Center. A reception will be held prior to the ceremony at 6:15 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the Civic Center.

More than 200 students are set to receive associate degrees at Thursday night’s graduation. In addition, more than 450 diplomas and 950 technical certificates of credit will be awarded. Thirty-two students are slated to receive their General Education Development (GED) and 119 students will be walking with various honors. These honors will include American Criminal Justice Association Club, Ambassadors, Engineering Club (E-Club), Honors with Distinction, National Technical Honors Society (NTHS), Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), Presidential Scholar, SkillsUSA, Student Fellowship for Christians (SFC), and Student Government Association (SGA). These students were also honored at the college’s Honors Day program held earlier this week.

Keynote speaker for the ceremony will be Matt Arthur, Commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). Arthur was appointed TCSG Commissioner by Governor Nathan Deal in January 2018, after serving as Deputy Commissioner for three years. As Commissioner, he leads the state’s workforce development efforts through a system of 22 technical colleges; the state’s adult education and literacy program; and Georgia Quick Start, the nation’s number one customized workforce training program.

Before joining TCSG, Arthur was Director of Education Reform for the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget and served for 13 years as Superintendent of the Rabun County School System. Throughout his long and multi-faceted career in education, Arthur has held leadership roles in a variety of state and national organizations, including the Georgia School Superintendents Association and the Governor’s Education Reform Commission. Currently, he is the chair of the Georgia Alliance of Education Agency Heads and a member of the State Workforce Development Board.

Commissioner Arthur is a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he received the College of Education’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He and his wife, Margie, reside in Rabun County and have two adult daughters.
