Albany's Turtles Get a Face Lift

Posted on

May 10, 2011- WALB - The Leadership Albany class of 2008 took on the project to refurbish the public artwork.

They're getting some help from Albany Technical College which picked up four turtles this week to begin striping the paint and sanding them.

Two turtles will be redone in honor of 23-year old D. J. Vinson who jumped into the Flint River to pull two young brothers from the water.

He and others saved one boy, but 11-year-old Joshua Perry and Vinson both drowned.

"In remembrance of both of them one of the large turtles is going to be painted into a high school baseball player it's going to have D. J.'s number as well as his name on his jersey and a smaller turtle will be done to represent Joshua," said Rashelle Beasley of Leadership Albany.

Organizations that previously sponsored a turtle will be given a chance to renew their sponsorship.

If they're not willing, the Convention and Visitors Bureau has a list of groups waiting to paint a turtle.
