June 3, 2013- Albany, Ga.-- On Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at 11am, Albany Technical College will host the Spring Honors Day Program in the Kirkland Conference Center.
Forty-five spring honor graduates will be recognized in the following areas: Collegiate DECA, Honors with Distinction, National Technical Honors Society (NTHS), Presidential Scholar, SkillsUSA, and General Education Development (GED®).
The guest speaker for the program will be Colonel Stephen Anthony Medeiros, Commander of the Marine Depot Maintenance Command Albany.
Colonel Stephen Medeiros currently serves as the Commander of the Marine Depot Maintenance Command with production plants in Albany, GA and Barstow, CA. He received a bachelor's degree from Virginia Military Institute in May 1985 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Upon completion of The Basic School in November of 1985, Mederios reported to Engineer School, Courthouse Bay, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
After completion of combat engineer officer instruction, Second Lieutenant Medeiros reported to the 9th Engineer Support Battalion where he served in succession as Platoon Commander, Company C, Executive Officer, Company A, and finally as Executive Officer, Company C. He was deployed to the Republic of the Phillippines and to South Korea. Returning to the United States in October of 1988, Medeiros assumed duties as the Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, Marine Corps Base, Quantico. In August of 1990, he was assigned as the Director of Maintenance and Repair, Facilities Maintenance and served in this capacity until reporting to Amphibious Warfare School in August of 1991. Upon completion, he was reassigned as a Platoon Commander of the Officers' Candidate School.
In September of 1992, Medeiros reported to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion and assumed command of Company A in support of 2nd Marine Regiment where platoons of the company deployed to CAX, A.P. Hill, and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. In June of 1994, he was reassigned as the S-3, Battalion Operations Officer. Leaving the Battalion in June of 1995, he reported to Battle Creek, Michigan and assumed the duties as the Inspector-Instructor, Engineer Support Company, 6th Engineer Support Battalion. While there, the company deployed twice to southern California and Texas in support of Task Force Southwest Border and Joint Task Force-Six. He graduated from the Marine Corps Command and Staff Non-Resident Program in August of 1997.
While attached to the 6th Engineer Support Battalion, Medeiros attended Armed Forces Staff College in preparation for his next assignment in February of 1999 to United States Forces, Japan, Yokota AB, Japan. While there, he served as the Okinawa Team Leader responsible for implementing the Special Action Committee, Okinawa Agreement and the relocation of MCAS Futenma.
Having been reassigned back to the Marine operating forces, Medeiros reported to Marine Wing Support Group-37, MCAS Miramar, California in August of 2001, where he was assigned as the S-3 Operations Officer. In May of 2002, he earned a master's degree in Social Science from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. Leaving MWSG-37 after ten months, he assumed command of the 9th Engineer Support Battalion, Okinawa, Japan and led the battalion until July of 2004. Selected for Top Level School, he attended the Inter- American Defense College, graduating in June of 2006 and reassigned to Commander, USSOUTHCOM as the Vice J5 and finally as the Director, Enterprise Support Logistics (J4) in 2008.
In 2007, Medeiros was designated a National Security Management Fellow at Syracuse University, New York. In 2009, he was reassigned to the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab and assumed duties as the Director and finally as the G3, Operations Officer. His personal decorations include: the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.
During the ceremony, greetings will also be given by AAmir Greene, Albany Tech's Student Government Association (SGA) President and Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) Student of the Year and the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) Student Ambassador. A musical tribute will be given by Monica Westbrook, Practical Nursing student at Albany Tech.
Albany Tech will hold spring commencement ceremonies on Friday, June 7, 2013, at 7pm at the Albany Civic Center. Keynote speaker will be Lt. Commander K. Moore, Commanding Officer of the United States Coast Guard Station Atlantic City and Coast Guard Station Small Great Egg. More information following later in the week.
