May 18, 2012- Albany Technical College will hold its Third Annual G.I.R.L.S. Summer Camp May 21-22, 2012. The theme for this year's event is Gumption. Innovation. Responsibility. Leadership. Service. (G.I.R.L.S.), "Empowering our Community, Workforce, and Future."

The G.I.R.L.S. Camp will include high school students from the College's seven-county service delivery area, including Baker, Calhoun, Clay, Dougherty, Lee, Randolph, and Terrell counties. The camp will also consist of students from Turner Job Corps. These young ladies will spend two days on the campus of Albany Technical College and learn the basics of carpentry, electrical wiring, electromechanical engineering, and heating & air conditioning. The campers will also have an opportunity to assist Flint River Habitat for Humanity in painting and landscaping new Habitat homes.

The featured guest speaker for the camp will be Mrs. Susie Clyde. Having worked as a lab technician for Cooper Tire & Rubber Company for 15 years, Clyde's accomplishments include attaining a diploma in Carpentry from Albany Tech just last year. She is expected to receive a diploma in Masonry at Albany Tech later this month. A nominee for the 2012 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL), Clyde also recently received a silver medal in the 2012 SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta. In 2009, she received a certificate from the Georgia Academy for Economic Development, Region 10, the Terrell County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Achievement Trophy and Conflict Management for Women. She is a life member of the Handyman Club of America and a member of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and is a regular volunteer with Flint River Habitat for Humanity.

"According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the labor market in our region and country has experienced incremental growth in the last couple months. As we continue to rebound from a sluggish economy, we must have a skilled and educated workforce ready to meet the needs and demands of industry. It is our objective to provide local industry with a workforce that is capable, competent, and creativity enough to compete on a global stage," said Emmett Griswold, Dean of Albany Tech's Carlton Construction Academy.

"Hopefully, this two day experience will generate a genuine interest among the campers in a construction & energy career path," added Griswold.

Albany Technical College thanks its sponsors, which include the Georgia Energy and Industrial Construction Consortium (G.E.I.C.C.), Flint River Habitat for Humanity, and Advertising with Lisa.
