Albany Technical College Holds Spring Commencement Exercises on Thursday Evening

Dr. Ivan H. Allen PhotoALBANY, GA – Albany Technical College will hold Spring 2019 Commencement Exercises on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at 7 p.m. at the Albany Civic Center.

Nearly 140 students are set to receive associate degrees, almost 250 diplomas, and over 600 technical certificates of credit. 20 students are slated to receive their General Education Development (GED). In addition, over 60 students will be walking with various honors.

Keynote speaker for the ceremony will be Ivan H. Allen, Ed.D., President of Central Georgia Technical College. In 2005, Dr. Ivan H. Allen was selected to serve as president of Middle Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins, Georgia. In July 2013, Middle Georgia Technical College and Central Georgia Technical College in Macon and Milledgeville consolidated to form the new Central Georgia Technical College, where Dr. Allen continues to serve as the president of the newly formed institution.

After taking the helm of what has become one of the state’s largest two-year colleges, Dr. Allen has remained steadfast in his commitment to the students and to the communities served by Central Georgia Technical College. In FY2017, CGTC graduated over 3,400 students from credit programs. For the past four years, CGTC has been the only technical college in Georgia to graduate more than 3,000 students in one academic year. Additionally, more than 2,600 students were served through the College’s Adult Education program, with 710 students receiving their GED® in FY2017. Moreover, CGTC serves as a catalyst for Economic Development by providing support and services to more than 330 companies and more than 19,000 customers annually throughout the 11 counties in the Central Georgia region.

Out of more than 7,500 institutions reporting data to the US Department of Education, CGTC was ranked fifth nationally in 2017 for one-year awards among two-year institutions. Most recently, CGTC was ranked in the top 24 institutions by Military Times magazine nationwide as Best for Vets and was designated as a Military Friendly© school for 2017. The College was also selected to receive the Partner Agency of the Year award from the Georgia Department of Corrections (DOC) in recognition of services offered at DOC sites in 2016 and was named as one of six Models of Excellence by University Business magazine among colleges and universities nationwide in 2017.

Under Dr. Allen’s leadership, CGTC has expanded its reach globally by developing educational and training partnerships with countries across the world, including Afghanistan, China, Colombia, England, Germany, Ireland, Libya, Scotland, and Tunisia. Since establishing the Global Initiatives program, the College hosts annual study abroad experiences and has hosted faculty, staff, and students from around the globe.

In addition to serving the Technical College System of Georgia, Dr. Allen is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Houston Healthcare System and is a member of the Navicent Health Foundation Board. He also serves on the board of the 21st Century Partnership, the Museum of Aviation Foundation, the Better Business Bureau of Central Georgia and the CSRA, the Cherry Blossom Festival, the Middle Georgia Regional Education Service Agency, and the Middle Georgia Consortium.

Most recently, he was elected to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). SACSCOC serves as the recognized regional accrediting body for institutions of higher education that award degrees in 11 southeastern states. In this role, Dr. Allen joins the other elected SACSCOC Trustees in representing over 800 institutions of higher learning and taking actions on the accreditation of applicant, candidate, and member institutions in the southeastern states.

Dr. Allen is a native of Macon where he graduated from Mount De Sales Academy. He is a Phi Beta Kappa Graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta. He also holds a Master’s of Public Administration from Georgia College and State University and a Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Allen and his wife Danyel reside in Centerville with their three children.
