Albany Tech welcomes Hispanic/Latino community to campus
August 17, 2009 – ATC reaches 'untapped community' - The informal luncheon and workshop was aimed to welcome and inform Hispanic residents about the educational opportunities available at Albany Technical College.
The 2nd annual Hispanic/Latino Outreach Luncheon and Workshop was recently attended by a few members of the growing ethnic community. It featured a welcome by Albany Tech President Anthony Parker and various staff explaining educational choices, employment opportunities and financial aid options. It was led by Dean of Admissions Lisa De Jesús.
"The one thing I'd like you to take back to your communities and families... is we're very friendly and warm, and we will do all we can to make your student successful," said De Jesús in her opening comments to the crowd. De Jesús has been with Albany Tech for about 18 months.
"I think it's extremely important for Albany Technical College to reach out to our community, but also to our ethnic communities," said De Jesús, who hails from Puerto Rico. "Not only to know they're welcome, but also the educational opportunities and dreams they are able to achieve at Albany Tech."
Albany Tech had 21 Hispanic/Latino students enrolled during Fiscal Year 2009. It had 33 in FY 2004, 34 in FY '05, 46 in FY '06, 35 in FY '07 and 25 in FY '08, according to Albany Tech's public relations department.
"The Hispanic/Latino community is an untapped community and I think we can do a better job of addressing their needs," De Jesús said.
Ana Moored, pastor of Albany's Iglesia Viviendo En Fé (Living Faith Church), was one of the community members invited to the outreach.
"I think it is a good opportunity to inform people of all the opportunities Albany Technical College provides," Moored said. "It's important because the (Hispanic) community has grown over the last few years and I've been here around 25 years and it's grown incredibly. I've seen a lot more businesses and Hispanic business owners. They're bringing more diversity to the community and it's a privilege to be a part of the Albany community.
"At our church, we're not only guiding the spiritual, but we're also guiding them to be part of the community successfully."
