Albany Tech signs four to class

April, 9 2009 — The Titans men’s basketball program inks four, including a former Westover Patriot.  After recording the program’s first winning season, the Albany Tech Titans are losing 10 of their 12 players due to graduation.

In its first effort to reload, coach Sylvester Patterson’s team signed four players, including former Westover standout Rahaem James, Tuesday. The other signees were Turner Job Corps’ Justin Pipkins, Duran Blue and Romero Owens.

Albany Tech, which went 20-12 and lost against eventual region champion South Georgia Tech in the tournament semifinals, have focused on defense thus far in recruiting.

“This class right here can really play some defense,” Patterson said. “We saw in our later games that we needed some late stops and we weren’t able to get them.”

Last fall, James was ready to start a red-shirt freshman season at Abraham Baldwin before the school closed both its programs.

“It’s close to home and I like the coaches and I like Coach Patterson’s style of play,” said James, who said he averaged 17 points and five rebounds his senior year at Westover.

At Turner Job Corps, Pipkins is averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds, Blue 20.3 points and Owens 12 points and 12 assists.
