Albany Tech Opened New Health Information Technology Lab Today
June 3, 2010 - In preparation for the Health Information Technology associate degree program launch beginning summer quarter, Albany Technical College held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in the Nathaniel Cross Health Building, Room 346, to officially open the Health Information Technology lab.
The Health Information Technology program combines health care with information technology. Health information technicians are responsible for maintaining and analyzing data crucial to the delivery of quality patient care.
The new virtual lab, sponsored through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), will offer 3M software for coding and practice fusion for electronic health records.
“The students will be provided with a virtual learning experience just as if they are in a hospital working,” said Victoria Mills, instructor for the Health Information Technology program at Albany Tech.
Employment opportunities for graduates of approved health information technology programs are excellent. Some of the facilities utilizing health information technology professionals include those providing inpatient care, ambulatory care, long-term care, psychiatric care, cancer registry and medical insurance providers. Other employment opportunities include mental health facilities, skilled nursing facilities, health maintenance organizations, health insurance agencies, ambulatory care facilities, and large physician group practice facilities.
