February 18, 2009 (WALB) - Albany Technical College is strengthening its designation as a "tree Campus U.S.A."

To commemorate Arbor Day students from the horticulture class planted a tree on Wednesday on campus.

Albany Tech is one of only four campuses in the nation to earn the "tree Campus" title for preserving and replanting trees.

As this new tree grows it will offer more than just a shady spot for Albany Tech students during the hot South Georgia summers.

"They also put oxygen in the air. It's about being green, because they take in carbon dioxide and emit oxygen," said George Paul, Albany Tech Instructor

The first Arbor Day was celebrated in 1872 in Nebraska.

The official Georgia state celebration occurs on the third Friday in February every year.
