Public Notice: Active Shooter Drill scheduled at Albany Technical College

Posted on

ALBANY, GA – The Campus Safety Committee in conjunction with the Albany Technical College Police Department will be conducting the annual Fall Active Shooter Drill on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at Albany Technical College’s Campus on South Slappey Boulevard in Albany. This is a drill not an exercise, so there will be no outside law enforcement agencies nor emergency personnel responding to this drill. To simulate gunshots, the Albany Technical College Police Department will be safely firing a shotgun, pointed in the air, loaded with blanks or what others may refer to as dummy rounds throughout the campus.

The purpose of the Code Orange drill is to observe, monitor, and evaluate how the occupants on campus transition into the secure in place/lockdown mode. An actual Code Orange lockdown, when initiated, is to secure staff, students, and visitors into the nearest secured facility and minimize their exposure to a potential threat and/or to allow them to decide upon other survivable options such as evacuation, running, crawling, hiding, playing dead, or fighting for their life if necessary, during a potentially lethal threat situation. The Code Orange lockdown also serves to lessen the risk of injury or casualties to students, staff, faculty, and any visitors who are on campus at the time of the threat.

The drill will take place at various locations throughout the Albany Tech Campus. No roads or highways near the campus are expected to be closed, and any impact to the community should be minimal. On the day of the drill signs will be strategically placed throughout the campus giving notice of the drill in progress.

Residents should be aware that real life sights and sounds may be seen and heard along the periphery of the campus and through a variety of emergency response vehicles in the area.

This exercise will not interrupt public safety services. Residents in the area should continue reporting real world emergencies by dialing 9-1-1.
