Starting college is a new experience and, like all new experiences, can be both exciting and challenging at the same time. Adjusting to academic expectations and new settings can be difficult. With the right support, however, new students can overcome these initial hurdles and set themselves up to get the most out of their college education.

That's the fundamental belief behind the STARS Program – a program that supports students in building long-lasting skills they need in order to succeed and get the most out of their education.

The STARS Team works with a number of departments across the College to develop initiatives to support the program's overarching goals by assisting first-semester students. Helping an individual student involves understanding their unique challenges in and outside the classroom and working with them to create a plan of action that may include tapping into campus resources.

The STARS Team regularly uses class time to reinforce strategies for studying and reducing stress. By approaching student success from different angles, we are able to meet a greater number of individual needs. Although the STARS program is aimed at first-semester students, its benefits are intended to spread far beyond those students it helps individually. The STARS program supports students in building long-lasting skills they need in order to succeed and get the most out of their education.

The program targets first-semester students and consists of three key objectives:

  • Encouraging the development of academic competence
  • Providing ongoing orientation to campus resources and services
  • Helping to identify early on students who require additional support

The STARS Team members are here talk to students about their study habits, work schedule, motivation, career goals, and much more. We may also refer the student to an outside agency that can better assist in addressing the problem areas.
